You may be surprised to find that "teacup" Yorkies are not an official breed term. Indeed, Yorkies come in various sizes and colors, but typically, an adult Yorkie weighs between 4-7 pounds, according to AKC standards. We've seen Yorkies that are larger or smaller, but size is not guaranteed. Some born at 3 ounces might grow into larger Yorkies, while others born at 6 ounces might stay small. It's a mix of genetics and diet. As the saying goes, "variety is the spice of life." Historically, Yorkies were bred smaller by preference. However, at PawfectPawPals, our aim is not to produce "tiny" dogs, though it can happen. Yorkies are naturally petite and prone to hypoglycemia, or "low sugar," due to fluctuating insulin and glucose levels. This condition can be managed by feeding your Yorkie multiple small meals a day on a regular schedule. Unfortunately, the smaller the Yorkie, the greater the risk of hypoglycemia.
